The Maine

The Maine (a quintet from Tempe, Arizona) was formed in 2006 by Garrett Nickelsen and Pat Kirch (bassist and drummer, respectively); John O'Callaghan (singer), Ryan Osterman, and Alex Ross joined the band after Nickelsen and Kirch held auditions, though Osterman and Ross left the band after their first EP (Stay Up, Get Down) was released, making room for Kennedy Brock and Jared Monaco to join. In 2007, the band signed to Fearless Records and released their second EP, The Way We Talk, before releasing their first full-length album, Can't Stop, Won't Stop, and an holiday EP, ...And a Happy New Year, in 2008. The band signed to Warner Bros. Records in 2009, releasing a fourth EP (In Darkness & In Light) and their second album, Black & White, in 2010 and embarking on their first headlining tour. Pioneer, the bands third album, was released in 2011 (re-released in September [2012] in the UK and Europe as Pioneer and The Good Love and featured six new tracks; in the US, you can get these tracks as Good Love- The Pioneer B-Sides), and the band is currently working on their fourth album (which will be an independent release) with Brendan Benson (solo artist and from The Raconteurs; this next album is bound to be great).
At some point in your life, you will fall in love with The Maine; they're great (and continually getting better) so it's kind of inevitable (I fell in love with their sound a few years ago when I was paired with a roommate who may be The Maine's biggest fan). Their first album (Can't Stop, Won't Stop) was just fun and good (and still is), their second album (Black & White) contained a mixture of their early pop rock sound with a more alternative rock sound (and showed just how much the band had grown since their first album), and their third album is so stuffed full of great alternative rock songs, mature lyrics, and perfectly simple guitar riffs that it's hard not to be proud of this band that so easily made the transition from a cute boy band with good music to a group of guys who can create something as beautiful as "Take Me Dancing".
"Give Me Anything" and "We Change, We Wait" may be from the band's first EP's, but the songs are still great and they show the talent for song-writing and composition which the band has always had.
Can't Stop, Won't Stop may be the bands first album, but it's still full of really great songs. "I Must Be Dreaming" and "Into Your Arms" are just cute (and you have to like the line, "she had the most amazing smile, I bet you didn't expect that"), while "You Left Me" and "Girls Do What They Want" are just really great songs (and fun to dance around to).
The bands sound changed from their first album to their second, but Black & White is no less great than their first album was; it relies more heavily on punk rock sounds and less so on the punk pop that was so prevalent on their first album. Songs like "Don't Stop Now", "Fuel to the Fire" and "Right Girl" are impossible to not sing-along to and the only thing better than those lyrics are those heavy drum beats and insistent guitar riffs that make you want to dance. "Growing Up" is nostalgic and great and "Listen to Your Heart" just makes me happy; plus, "Inside of You" is great because it was written about a girl that thought O'Callaghan was gay (there is no deeper meaning with sweet analogies; it's a song about sex with a funny back-story).
The band took the time to mature and redefine themselves (from a punk boy band to a mature quintet) a bit before releasing their third album, Pioneer; this new sound is amazing. The band sounds like they've finally found some really great solid ground on which to build their musical careers and I can't wait to hear what they have coming on their next album. "My Heroine" and "Time" have really great rock beats (with even better lyrics), and "Some Days" and "Don't Give Up On 'Us'" do a great job of infusing their new rock sound with a little bit of that punk pop that was so prevalent on their earlier albums, making the songs just fun enough that they become completely addictive. "Thinking of You" is the most adorable song; "Whoever She Is" was cute, "Into Your Arms" makes me smile, and "Listen to Your Heart" is just good, but "Thinking of You" is a perfect mixture of 'cutesy' with a little bit of a rock beat and a punk rock guitar riff that makes it more than acceptable to hit that replay button. "While Listening to Rock & Roll" sounds like it's influenced a little more by country than by rock and shows a more mellow side to the band; a sound which is easy to hear on their newest EP, Good Love- The Pioneer B-Sides.
Their latest EP featured songs that relied more heavily on the influences of classic rock and country chords than anything else, but the band makes this new sound work for them; and the only thing better than the new compositions are those always great lyrics the band so easily creates. "I'm Leaving" and "Hello World" have great guitar riffs (and great lyrics, as always), while "I Want You" shows a mellow side of the band (relying heavily on acoustic sounds) that we have not heard too often. "You'll Never Know" and "Take Me Dancing" may be the most amazing songs the band has ever created (I cannot emphasize enough how great "Take Me Dancing" is; it's at a level of perfection that few songs can reach). "Good Love" is an amazing song and a really great way to end their EP; my anticipation for their next album only grows stronger each time I hear those guitar riffs and drum beats join up at that 2:35 mark.
Good lyrics and solid compositions are a staple to this bands music and I have no fucking clue how they are not yet famous; The Maine has released five EP's and three full-length albums and not one of their songs has been 'bad' (plus, the only version of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" that I have ever liked is The Maine's). Check out the band in the links below and make sure to keep an eye out for announcements on their upcoming fourth album release.

The Maine Update

The Maine released their latest album, Forever Halloween, today (June 4th) and I cannot wait to listen to the album in full (multiple times), because The Maine never releases music that is anything less than great; everything from the teenage pop rock featured on their first album to the mature alternative rock found on their third album has been perfect, and I expect much the same from the band's fourth album.
While I learn these new songs by heart, add them to all my summer playlists, and begin to write up an album review for you guys, you can get this album on iTunes or Amazon (or Best Buy or the band's website) or, at the very least, listen to this song to get a taste of the great sounds on this new album.
I chose this song because there is a music video for you guys to watch, but you really should check out "Run", because it's fantastic (plus, the two separate songs give a wide overview of the type of song found on this album).

Boycotting. Really?

To all the people who have stated that they are not going to come to Florida because of the results of the Zimmerman trial, thank you. I really hate when you come down to our beach front stores and complain about everything moving slowly. First off, you don't have to say it like an insult; we are not unintelligent. A good two thirds of us are either using this job to pay for college or have completed college and are working this retail position in addition to an actual job (still trying to pay off college), so thanks for trying to belittle people with jobs. Secondly, you just need to calm it down and relax. You're on vacation; why are you rushing? I can guarantee you that the beach looks the same now as it will in ten minutes; and if you don't know the local beaches you're just going to end up at one of the crowded tourist beaches anyways so why are you rushing to be part of the crowd. Thirdly, let's be realistic; the large majority of you were never going to make it to Florida anyways.
The only truly annoying thing about this 'movement' is the misinformation that has spread everywhere. Stevie Wonder, you dumb fuck, the stand your ground law had nothing to do with the Zimmerman case; not once did the defense bring up "stand your ground" and, while I do not agree with the outcome of the trial, I do agree that anyone who bases their opinions off of a widely spread falsity is a moron. You can be against a law, that's cool, this is America where you can say whatever the hell you want and incite rage any damn way you wish to, but don't link your dislike of a law to a case that never invoked said law in the first place. You can say that there needs to be a clear demarcation between the definitions of self defense and Stand Your Ground, but you cannot say that they are one in the same, then proceed to attack one specifically, even though it played no part in the most recent Florida scandal.
If you feel like taking a useless stand because it is honestly the most effective thing you can think of, keep in mind that Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, California, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming all have Stand Your Ground or Castle Doctrine's of their own, so make sure you boycott those states as well. On your summer road trip of all twenty-two states you deem acceptable, have fun purporting your sycophantic ideals; I'll be lounging on a gorgeously empty Florida beach (if you want to get really specific, add in Massachusetts, Virginia, Iowa, and Washington; they all have their own versions of the Stand Your Ground law. So that's eighteen states you can now visit with a clear conscience).
Pretty much how I feel towards anyone that's boycotting an entire fucking state and the livelihoods of those people who rely on tourism with a little bit of my go to road rage song (which was one of the most energetic live performances ever; no matter how old I, or the band, get, I will always love The Offspring).
       "Fuck You" Lily Allen
"You're Gonna Go Far, Kid" The Offspring

*I made it all the way through that without making a single joke about how Wonder will never see Florida; that's fairly impressive.

Past Year's Bands to Watch

As the blog comes upon it's first full year of publication, I'm stuck between feeling sad that I have spent so much time over the past year hanging out on a computer and proud that I've actually made it through a year like this without missing too many posts. In the past few months, the blog has also grown to include a few more sites, aside from the original Gmail and YouTube, to include Twitter, Google+, and Myspace (though I'm not great at using the last two; I'm more comfortable with Facebook, though I can't use that confidently as a magazine has dubbed themselves 'The Music Rag'. The hell? I spent two weeks looking for a name no one else had used. I just. I'm so. Ugh. People. Fucking Australia.).. I honestly have no clue where I was before my rant..
Check out the websites (click on the links in the lower left hand corner of the blog [under 'contact me'] or here: Myspace, Google+, Twitter, YouTube) and listen to a playlist composed, solely, of this past year's 'bands to watch'. All of the music is awesome and all the bands have a sound with the ability to stand out in the business (I wouldn't promote them if they didn't).

Painting Playlist

Have a paint/cleaning job that requires good music to sing along to? Of course you do, because everyone loves being covered in paint at two in the morning (for the record, I did not start the paint fight).
Start with "I Need Your Love" (or "Run" because it is truly amazing), then put the playlist on shuffle because it's easier to do manual labor when you're singing and dancing along to music.

Halloween Playlist

I love Halloween, a lot, and while this playlist is shortened from my own and has some duplicates from last year (missing classics like "Time Warp" and, the always expected, "Thriller", and repeating awesome songs like "House of Wolves" and "You Raised a Vampire"), it's still stuffed full of great music that's perfect for the holiday.

8/20

I'll be starting off the first week back to class by heading back to Indiana to be with family and I just don't have the motivation necessary to put together a nice playlist that includes all the music that is sent to me and the latest singles. Due to this lack of enthusiasm, and after missing the 15th of the month playlist (again), rather than presenting you guys with the customary constructed list, this is my personal playlist.
After the funeral and some family time, I will be more than ready to get back on track and distract myself with album reviews of Dear You's and Andrew Belle's latest releases (Faith, Fear, and Hope and Black Bear, respectively [because they're both great]) but, for now, I'm just going to leave you guys with the songs circling on repeat on my playlist.

Campfire Songs

You know that moment (during a fire) when the last log is burning out, the S'mores and Cheetos are nearly all gone, the laughter and jokes have died down, and you're just laying back and staring up at the stars? Music for Marriage Equality

Are you tired of the debate over DOMA yet, because I know I am (if you don't know what it is, the Defense Of Marriage Act was signed into law in 1996 as a federal law which stated that a marriage would only be recognized if it was between a man and a woman and which placed restrictions on federal marriage benefits; in a same-sex relationship, you do not receive the same rights married couples are granted [shared health insurance, your spouses employment benefits, joint tax returns, immigration (you cannot sponsor your spouse for a green card), and in same-sex marriage to a military personnel, their spouse is not granted the same access to post, legal counseling, or housing as opposite sex marriage spouses are]). Currently, even though your same sex marriage may be recognized in your state (if you live in Connecticut, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Vermont, Washington, or the District of Columbia [Rhode Island does recognize same-sex marriages performed in other states and California conditionally recognizes same-sex marriages]) it is still not recognized at a federal level (you can be married in your state but, in the eyes of the federal law, you're not married). Basically, it's an outdated law and it's ridiculous that we're still screwing around with it (ridiculous laws get overturned all the time. Less than fifty years ago, interracial marriages were illegal; you don't want to be on the ignorant side of history).
Regardless of your personal beliefs, it's silly that I was born with the right to marry some man I haven't met yet while my best friend has to fight against the prejudice and laws made by people who know nothing about how great of a person she is, just so that one day she might have the right to marry the woman she loves.
Before I get too far off the informational path and delving into my personal opinions, let me just jump into the part that makes this post justifiable on a music blog. Artists have been putting out great videos lately and I can't get enough; here are some of the best.
Todrick Hall's "Cinderfella" is just fun (centering on the idea of a happily ever after in a traditionally heterosexual environment [Disney fairy-tales]).
Darren Criss always puts on a good show and his performance at this year's GLAAD Awards was no exception.
Macklemore and Ryan Lewis' "Same Love" (featuring Mary Lambert) may be my favorite of these videos; even though Todrick Hall is terribly gorgeous and Darren Criss has an amazing voice I just can't get enough of this amazing beat and these beautiful lyrics.

"Love Like Woe"

"Love Like Woe" The Ready Set
In an effort to make these song posts more enjoyable (acceptable), I am going to add some stream of consciousness to it; that's all that my posting a singular song really is (an uncensored thought), but this will just give you something to do while listening to the song and it will help me feel better about neglecting you guys until I have time to sit down and complete something.
There is no rational explanation for my absolute addiction to this song; it's not like something from The Maine where I'm thinking "oh, but John O'Callaghan is so pretty" or something from The All-American Rejects where I just have to love it because I (literally) fought for their first album and have loved every song they've recorded (while on this note: If you have a chance to see the bands you idolized when you were young, do it; it will be amazing [even if the lead singer does look a little really rundown and, due to this appearance, sounds a bit creepy at times]).
I can only determine that I heard this song sometime during my freshman year of college and decided, at that exact moment, that it would be my new favorite song... I may have been drunk because that's when I seem to make my best worst decisions (that does make sense linguistically [and logically] if you think about it for a bit) and, while this song is not the best song (having no real merit), it is a great song.
"Love Like Woe" is always addicting because of that perfectly odd mixture of piano (which opens the song, then sets the tempo for the remainder), a little bit of autotune, great back beats, a really pretty voice, that rap/singing that sounds a little reminiscent of a reggae style (except that I actually like it), and an ending that stops just short of abrupt (leaving you wanting more, without making you feel cheated)It's kind of an amazing song in the way that it mixes so many aspects of different genres (without sounding like a crowded mess) and the lyrics are surprisingly great for a song that is stuffed full of pop beats. It's a pretty great song that only grows more addictive with each listen.

Take Me Home

I'm briefly interrupting SafetySuit Saturday because i am just so ridiculously excited to see The Downtown Fiction (almost as excited as I was to see my first ever concert [for the purpose of you guys still possibly respecting me, we'll just say that Tokyo Police Club was my first]).
Aside from Sleeperstar and Swifty (I try to ignore her but I can't), their's was the only full length album I listened to during my freshman year of college... and that was a weird year. Regardless, I thought for sure that the band had broken up as the break between albums was so great and I'm so glad they're still together and that I get to go dance around to this, because they're like a young The Maine with a lot of extra punk thrown in and their music is kind of awesome.
Look up tour dates for Tonight Alive's The Other Side Tour because Tonight Alive is great (bands with lead female vocals are coming back around to be the next trend that takes over music), For the Foxes has catchy music you have to move to, and Echosmith is the definition of up-and-coming.

Cleaning

If it looks like Forever 21 and Ann Taylor exploded, then Barnes & Noble threw some books around to decorate and you woke up with a dog toy and a Flight of the Conchords DVD box under your pillow, you need an awesome cleaning mix because your weekend off from work has become a cleaning weekend.
Seeing as how you're good enough at procrastinating that it has reached the point where you're going to have to spend the entire weekend doing nothing but cleaning, you need a good playlist to keep you focused and going until you've finished.
"Killin' It" Foxy Shazam
"Hurricane" Panic! At the Disco
"22" Taylor Swift
"Keep Me Crazy" Chris Wallace
"Rich Kids" New Medicine
"Leaving on a Jet Plane" Me First & The Gimme Gimmes

Take Me Dancing

If, for whatever reason, you still have not subscribed to the popular belief that The Maine is amazing, do so now. Their music continually matures with gorgeous results and, every time the band releases an album, it's a whole new level of perfection.
Their latest album, Forever Halloween, was released in June and is available for your consumption on iTunes and Amazon; get it (and every other album they've released; "Take Me Dancing" is featured on Pioneer).

Run

Nothing feels quite as good during rush hour traffic as turning your radio up hella loud with a song you can sing along to. Plus, I am overly addicted to this new song from The Maine's latest album, Forever Halloween, released June 4th.
